Presented is a 1957 team photograph of the New York Yankees, the American League Champions. The offered Type I photo includes Hall of Fame players Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, and Enos Slaughter, plus Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel. This International News photo was taken by Herb Sharfman. The '57 Yankees had a 98-56 record in capturing the Yankees' 23rd pennant. The team lost the World Series to the Milwaukee Braves in seven games. In that season, Mickey Mantle won the AL MVP when he hit 34 home runs, drove in 94 runs, and batted .365. Berra hit 24 home runs; Tom Sturdivant led the pitchers with a 16-6 record and 2.54 ERA, and Ford was 11-5, with a 2.57 ERA. The team had many notable players, including the Yankees' first African American player, Elston Howard; Don Larsen, the only player to ever pitch a perfect game in the World Series; grizzled veteran Sal Maglie, who had also pitched for New York City's other three teams at the time - the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants, and Enos Slaughter, the former St. Louis Cardinals great outfielder still playing at age 41. Four of the Yankees Hall of Famers are sitting in the first row: Left to right, starting on the far left, are Ford, Slaughter, and Berra, seventh from the left in the first row is Stengel. Mantle is fifth from the left in the top row. In the front row, left to right after Berra, are Shantz, Keller (coach), Crosetti (coach), Stengel, Turner (coach), Bella, Richardson, Skowron, and McDougald. In the second row, from left: Mauch (trainer), Simpson, Coleman, Howard, Turley, Del Grecco, Lumpe, Kubek, Grim, Larsen, Ditmar. Top row: Sturdivant, Carey, Johnson, Bauer, Mantle, Bryne, Cicotte, Kucks, Maglie, Serrett, Collins. Seated in front are batboys Eddie Carr and Pat Ferry. The photo shows great clarity and condition. The back has an International News stamp, and a teletyped suggested caption (including identification of team members) in both English and Spanish. The aforementioned suggested caption, dated 9-19-53, reads, in part, "Here is the 1957 team photo of the New York Yankees which, barring miracles, has another American League pennant in the bag." The photo has been encapsulated and PSA certified Type I AUTHENTIC.
