Gordie Howe once remarked, "Everybody who is anybody in hockey has played in Hershey." While that might not be 100% accurate, it emphasizes Hershey's storied tradition in the world of professional hockey. Offered here is a scarce Hershey Bears American Hockey League (AHL) jersey dating from the circa 1962-1963 season. This jersey also has a unique provenance. Our consignor grew up in Hershey and played on the Hershey junior league hockey team. The tradition at the time was that the Hershey Bears would receive new jerseys each year, with those used in the previous season passed down to the junior club. To the best of his recollection, our consignor wore this jersey in the 1963-1964 season, which dates its use by the Hersey Bears to the 1962-1963 season. It has remained in his possession since that time. The maroon jersey, with white accents, is lettered "Hershey" across the front and features the number "5" on the reverse and each sleeve. The team's "Bear" logo patch appears on the left breast. All letters and numerals are applied in white tackle twill. The jersey, which bears no manufacturer's tags (there is no evidence of any tags having been removed) displays heavy wear, including light staining and a few small tears, a moderate tear in the front collar, and a small team repair on the front. Research indicates that Larry "The Rock" Zeidel wore number "5" with the Hershey Bears during the 1963-1964 season. Zeidel enjoyed a long twenty-five-year professional career in hockey, with his longest tenure spent in Hershey (1955-56 to 1962-63). Known as one of the game's most physical and violent players, Zeidel played with both the Flyers and Red Wings of the NHL in the 1950s and was a member of the 1952 Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings. He ended his career in the NHL, playing with the Flyers in the 1967-68 and 1968-69 seasons. This is an outstanding vintage 1960s hockey jersey relating to one of professional hockey's most venerable franchises.
