Displayed is a 1968 Chicago Cubs Verlon "Rube" Walker game worn away jersey. Verlon Walker is the brother of Albert "Rube" Walker. Because Albert Walker, who played 11 Major League seasons, was nicknamed "Rube," younger brother Verlon also was called Rube when he played professional baseball, all in the minor leagues. These Walker brothers are often confused, since both were associated with the Cubs, both caught, and both were called "Rube." Rube played three-and-a-half seasons with the Chicago Cubs and seven-and-a-half seasons with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. Albert was a long-time backup to Roy Campanella, and Albert later was a pitching coach for three Major League teams, including 14 years with the New York Mets. Verlon never made the Major Leagues, but his baseball acumen was well-respected, and he eventually was a Major League coach with the Cubs (1961-70). For five seasons, Verlon was part of the experimental "College of Coaches" with the Cubs, a widely derided system in which a number of coaches took turns during the season being a "head coach" with the Cubs, who had no season-long manager. Verlon served as a coach under Cubs manager Leo Durocher in 1968, and he became a bullpen coach. He was slated to become the Cubs' pitching coach for the 1971 season, but leukemia forced his retirement, and he died from the disease in 1971. Across the chest, the jersey has CHICAGO in blue block letters, trimmed in red. There is a very faint stain above the team name. The left sleeve has a sewn-on Cubs logo patch. The right sleeve has a red, white, and blue sewn-on rare Sesquicentennial patch. In the neck is a sewn-on patch reading "4-68-1-46," which indicates that the jersey is #4, issued as the first set of 1968, and is a size 46. The lower, outside tail has a Wilson manufacturer's patch, and a "Wilson 1968 Set 1" patch. The back has a "4" as a sewn-on block letter in blue with red trim. The front has eight gray buttons. The offering comes with a signed letter from Vedie Himsl, the Cubs' Director of Scouting, stating that "Verlon 'Rube' Walker wore number four in 1968. He was one of our coaches...." The jersey shows light use, and it is in excellent condition.
