Joe Montana completed 3,409 passes during the regular season in his professional career: down-and-outs, posts, fly routes, button hooks, etc., but one type of passing Montana with which Montana didn't engage was the passing of bad checks. Joe was a famous quarterback who played 13 NFL seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, winning four Super Bowls, but as far as these canceled checks are concerned, the most intriguing aspect of his checks is their interesting normalcy. Presented is a group of 100 Joe Montana written checks, each one having his signature. The top of each check has a machine stamped "Joe Montana" and lists his address in Manhattan Beach, Calif. The checks are signed in blue ink from a ballpoint pen. The dates of the checks range from January 1979 (as a student at Notre Dame) to December 1979. The offering includes checks from May 1979, a few weeks after being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, and checks from September 1979, within a few days of making his NFL debut. Each is signed by Joe, with 19 of the earlier checks being signed with his full name "Joseph Montana." These checks provide ONE HUNDRED early Montana autographs from his rookie season with the 49ers and final year at Notre Dame. One check is from 1980. As an example of the normalcy of Montana's checks, just a small sample of the checks include ones for the following: The Diner's Club, Nautilus of Manhattan Beach, Calif., South Bay Municipal Court, General Telephone, Southern California Edison, TWA, Southern California Gas Co., Galleria Playa Hotel, and Harry's Market, etc. Many of the checks were made out to "Cash." The checks measure 2.75x6", and the checks are drawn on the Bank of America, of El Segundo, Calif. These checks come directly from Montana's Collection, so the provenance cannot be beaten.

The Joe Montana Former Wife Collection: Lots 1300-1311 in the current auction are pieces consigned by Joe Montana's former wife, Cass Ho. Each piece originates from Joe's collection and is being offered to the public for the first time. Items include signed checks from his rookie year, Notre Dame jersey presented to him by his coach and numerous personal items.
