Presented is a 1972 game worn Sam McDowell San Franscisco Giants cap. Known as "Sudden Sam" for the way his fastball seemed to explode from a smooth delivery, McDowell had a career record of 141-134 with a lifetime ERA of 3.17. He pitched for 15 Major League seasons, 1961-1975, spending 11 years with the Cleveland Indians. The 6'5" left-hander had his best season in 1970, when as an Indian, he went 20-12, with a 2.92 ERA, and he led the AL in both innings pitched at 305 and strikeouts, with 304. He was selected by The Sporting News as the 1970 American League Pitcher of the Year. McDowell was traded to San Francisco in 1972, and he went 10-8 with a 4.33 ERA. He split the 1973 season between San Francisco and the New York Yankees. He finished his career with the Yankees in 1974 and the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1975. During his career, he battled an admitted drinking problem, and after his retirement, he became a sports addiction counselor with the Toronto Blue Jays and the Texas Rangers, and he earned a World Series ring for his work with the 1993 Toronto Blue Jays. The black cap has "SF" on the front in orange letters. The leather band inside has "KM Pro" tagging and the size is indicated at "7 1/4." "McDowell" is written inside the leather band. The hat shows nice use, and it's in excellent condition. The offering has added appeal because the McDowell cap has a connection to the iconic television show Cheers. The character of Sam Malone, played by Emmy winning actor Ted Danson, was based on Sam McDowell.
