Presented is a rare program from the first year of the Boston Patriots. The program is from the August 14, 1960, Patriots' first ever home game, a preseason contest against the Dallas Texans. The Texans defeated the Patriots by 24-14 before 11,000 at Harvard Stadium. The Patriots and the Dallas Texans were two of the original eight teams in the new American Football League, whose inaugural season was 1960. The Patriots were coached by Lou Saban and a key player was quarterback Butch Songin. The Texans featured running back Abner Haynes and were coached by Hank Stram, a legendary coach who won three AFL Championships, more than any other AFL coach, and who won Super Bowl IV, in 1970, after this Dallas Texan team had moved to Kansas City and become the Chiefs after the 1962 season. The 48-page program measures 8.25x11". The contest was a benefit game for the Citizens' Participation Foundation, and the program cover depicts images of a Patriot and a Texan (cowboy) carrying a young boy, symbolic of the persons assisted by the Citizens' Participation Foundation, whose headquarters is in Boston. That season the Patriots finished at 5-9, in fourth place in the AFL's Eastern Division and the Dallas Texans finished at 8-6, in second place in the Western Division. It would be 1970 when the Patriots called the franchise the New England Patriots. The program is awash in fascinating details. For example, box seats cost only $6, "frankfurts" sold for 25 cents and peanuts went for 15 cents. An article mentioned that Patriot stock was available to the public at five dollars a share. Although both teams played two-platoon football, the positions in the program featured listings like those of one-platoon football: ends were listed as "E" for end, whether offensive or defensive, and offensive halfbacks and defensive backs were just listed as "HB" for halfback. etc. The program exhibits some creasing, some scuffing at the corners, tiny paper loss, and minor overall darkening because of the passage of over 60 years. Otherwise, the program is in excellent condition. The program is a fine remembrance of the beginning days of the American Football League, and the Patriots and the Chiefs in the very early days of their franchises.
