In 1938, Gum Inc. produced perhaps the most iconic of all non-sport sets, Horrors of War. Depicting violent and often gruesome images from the Sino-Japanese war and the early days of World War II, this set quickly became the one to have for the youths of the day, and continues to be one of the most popular non-sports sets to collectors today. Complete at 288 cards, keys of the set include #1 Marco Polo Bridge (GD-VG, oc), 240 The Frightful Cost of War (EX-), 277 Hitler's Border Tour (VG-EX, minor surface flaw), 283 Hitler Threatens Force (VG-, crease), 286 Chamberlain Meets Hitler (PR-FR, some paper loss on obverse, crease), and 288 Czech President Surrenders (VG-). Overall, cards from the first series (#s 2-48) grade 25% EX to EX-MT, 35% VG-EX, 25% GD-VG and 15% FR-GD; cards in the "mid' series (#s 49-239) grade 10% EX-MT or better (with a few worth grading), 25% EX to EX-MT, 35% VG-EX, 25% GD-VG and 5% FR-GD, with about 10% oc; the last series (#s 241-288) grades 10% EX, 35% VG-EX, 25% GD-VG, 20% FR-GD and 10% lesser, with eight (8) cards being oc. Overall, a nicely balanced set of one of the greatest non-sport issues.
