Presented is a complete set of R157-8 Uncle Sam's Home and National Defense, issued by Gum, Inc. in 1941. The set features military men in various scenes of battle and training, as well as depicting civilian efforts on the home front of a nation newly entered into a Second World War The detailed artwork, historically significant subject matter, and exciting narratives on the backs all contribute to making this set one of non-sport collecting's all-time classics. The R157 portion ("National Defense") is complete at 96 cards, while R158 (entitled "Home Defense") is an extension of R157 and is broken into a low-number series (#97-120) and a very challenging high-number series (#121-144). The overall condition of R157 is exemplary, with cards grading 80% EX-MT or better and 20% only slightly lesser; 10% of the cards are moderately o/c. Card #1 is EX-MT, o/c. The R158 low-number run is overall EX to EX-MT, with two (2) cards slightly lesser. The difficult high-number run (19 of 24, missing #s 121, 123, 132, 133 and 135) is 25% EX or better, 55% VG to VG-EX and 20% lesser (due to creasing, some discoloration or residue). Card #144 (last card) has light creasing, some residue on obverse, some paper loss on reverse but presents quite nicely, minimally at the VG-EX EX level. Seven (7) cards have been professionally graded by PSA: #22 (7; only 1 higher), #44 (7; only 2 higher), #65 (8; none higher, 1 of 2), #86 (7.5; only 1 higher), #86 (6; only 3 higher), #119 (6.5; only 1 higher) and #134 (6; only 1 higher). Overall, this composite set has tremendous eye-appeal, with colors that remain as clear and bright as the day they were printed. Bid with confidence, you will never regret winning it. Total of 139 cards.
