Certainly one of the most elegant, and one of the most important, tennis awards ever to be offered for sale at auction. Indescribably lovely crystal bird in flight rests atop a felt-lined, engraved base that reads, "World Champions, 1981 United States Davis Cup Team, United States 3 - Argentina 1." Bird's left wing was broken near the body, but expertly restored so that it wouldn't be noticed unless you were looking for it. The prize was awarded to bright American tennis star Tanner, who shared the glory with another legend of the sport, John McEnroe. Also accompanying the award is the winner's plaque (17x20"), with an image of the Davis Cup itself above the words, "'81 Davis Cup by NEC." The simple word, "Winner" is engraved on a brass plaque below. The award has remained in the possession of either Tanner himself, or of his wife, since it was won over twenty years ago. Letter of authenticity is from the ex-Mrs. Tanner.
