It’s a beautiful fall day in Flatbush and the New York Yankees are locking horns with the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 2 of the World Series. Brooklyn has captured the first game, and is looking to take the first two games at home before the series shifts to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The Dodgers jumped ahead in the bottom of the third, 1-0, but leading off the fourth inning in his second big league season is Mickey Mantle. The Commerce Comet struck out in the first inning against Brooklyn ace, Carl Erskine. This time up, he rips a double, barely beating Jackie Robinson’s tag. Mantle would score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Yogi Berra, tying the game 1-1. The Yankees would ride a five run sixth to take the second game and even what would eventually be a seven game series win for the Yankees. This would be the fourth of five straight world series championships for the Yankees, and would force the Dodgers to again “wait ‘til next year”. “Next Year” would finally arrive in 1955 when the Dodgers would win the Series, only to depart Brooklyn two years later for the west coast. This original 24" by 19" masterful Bill Purdom painting ensnares the spirit of this memorable play. A truly breath taking example of baseball art.
