The sole 19th century Red Cross issue, N266 consists of 25 unnumbered cards dated 1893 (dated on the card fronts in very small, faint print). Each card depicts a match between two fighters and illustrates a specific move. Some of the illustrations show blows permitted under the bare knuckle rules of the London Prize Ring (“L.P.R.”), but not under the modern rules for gloved prize fights. Card backs contain a short blurb about the fighters and fight, and a huge Red Cross ad. They are larger than average tobacco cards, which accounts for both their desirability and their difficulty in better conditions. This lot includes: Jackson (HOF) v. Slavin; Dixon (HOF) v. Johnson; Choynski (HOF) v. Goddard; Burns v. McCarthy; Edwards (HOF) v. Collyer; Murphy v. Weir (2); Frazier v. Daly (2) ; Griffin v. Lynch (2). While most cards are technically poor to fair they present nicer.
