Jersey, really a literal sweater as NHL jerseys used to be, is in patriotic red, white, and blue, with each of these colors being used in roughly equal amounts. On front, in white 1.25" letters on a blue stripe, is "Americans." Below that is "New York," in 4.13" red letters on a white stripe. The jersey is in "Barber Pole" style, with many red, white, and blue stripes. The front and back both features a burst of white stars on a red background. The New York Americans were the second NHL hockey team, after the Boston Bruins, to play a game south of the Canadian border. They were founded by famed boxer promoter Tex Richard, and famed New York City bootlegger Bill Dwyer. In existence from 1925-1942, they never won a Stanley Cup, but do have 11 players in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Hall of Famers include: Brothers Charlie and Lionel Conacher, and players with both great talent and great nicknames, such as Babe Dye, Hap Day, Red Dutton, Newsy Lalonde, and Shorty Green. They played their home games in Madison Square Garden, later sharing it with the New York Rangers. Fighting financial difficulties from playing second fiddle to the Rangers, and from the United States entry into World War II, they suspended operations in 1942, but never returned to the NHL. This jersey is one of the most striking styles in all of sports history. Colors are still very vibrant. There is no number on the back, so we don't know who wore it or if it was worn in a game - with old wool jerseys it is sometimes very difficult to ascertain if a number has been changed or removed. It does appear that there was never a number used. One thing we do know is that this is professional quality and team issued, not a souvenir. It did shrink as all wool jerseys do, and it does have some rips and wear. Some moderate insect damage, and some minor color bleeding. A super rare piece, you can count on one hand the number of these that have been sold in the last 30 years.
