The January 6, 1975 Blood-Horse magazine cover heralded the birth of one of racing’s most anticipated foals, but it’s likely the subscriber had already heard the news. This particular  magazine emanates from the personal collection of Secretariat’s luminary owner Helen “Penny” Tweedy and contains the original subscription mailing label to the “First Lady of Racing” on its cover. The well known and respected Thoroughbred industry publication features a heart-warming photo of the 1973 Triple Crown champion’s first Thoroughbred foal, a filly born on New Year’s Day 1975 at Faraway Farm to My Card. Miss Secretariat, as she would later be named, was born 18 days early on her dam’s actual birthday as well as the official birthday for all Thoroughbred racehorses. The cover photo shows her white star, just like her famous sire.

She was the first of 653 Thoroughbred offspring for the 1973 Triple Crown champion. Secretariat’s 16 foal crops would produce 22 graded winners, including champions Risen Star (Belmont Stakes) and Lady’s Secret (Horse of the Year). And his influence, through mares like Weekend Surprise and Terlingua, remains strong in the pedigrees of his descendants, including Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify.

Like a time capsule, this issue of The Blood-Horse also chronicles the celebration of the iconic Hialeah Racetrack’s 50th anniversary and the shocking death of La Prevoyante, a talented filly who suffered a heart attack during the 1974 Miss Florida Handicap just a week before.

The magazine is documented within the registry of the Secretariat/Meadow Stable Archives and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the Chenery/Tweedy family.
