S.F. Hess, a Rochester, NY company, issued an indeterminate number (new cards surface periodically) of rare blank-backed photographic cards of boxers and other celebrities. The set is so tough that the checklist must be considered incomplete. This card is an especially desirable one, as it depicts HOFer Tom Sayers, an old-time bare-knuckle champ from England who won the first international heavyweight championship fight when he beat California's John C. Heenan on April 17, 1860 in Hampshire, England. As with any SF Hess, this card is rare in any condition but presents well with an unmarred image and light creasing on the bottom of the card.
