Very rare team ball. This one is complete and comes from player Myles Thomas. Comes with a mini-bat (wood, 16.25" in length) with Miles (sic) Thomas on the barrel that was also given with the ball. Official American League (Johnson) ball is clean and has a coat of preservative shellac that has made it an even tannish. The 1926 Yankees finished in first place in the American League with a 91-63 record as Ruth led the hitters with 47 homers and 153 RBI. Herb Pennock won 23 games. In the World Series that year, the Yankees lost in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals. Before Series Game Four, Babe Ruth famously promised sick Johnny Sylvester that he would hit a homer for the ill boy. Ruth hit three home runs and the ability of Ruth to cure the ill arose, possibly thanks to his "right-hand man," publicist and agent Christy Walsh. Cardinals player-manager Rogers Hornsby started ancient pitcher Pete Alexander in Game Six and Alexander won, and then Alexander came back to earn a save in the 3-2 final game. Ball has 24 signatures, all in black ink. Babe Ruth on the sweet spot is 7.5/10. Signatures on the north panel are Chas. O'Leary, Miller Huggins, Bob Shawkey, Bob Meusel and Myles Thomas; they average 5-6/10. South panel has Mike Gazella, Ben Paschal, Roy Carlyle, Dutch Ruether, Sam Jones, Aaron Ward and Urban Shocker; these rate 6-7.5/10. On the west panel are Earle Combs, Herb Pennock, Lou Gehrig and Joe Dugan; these are 5/10. On the east panel are Tony Lazerri, Herb McQuid, Fred Merkle, Walter Beall, Garland Braxton, plus one other; these grade 2-4/10. A treasure.
