Vintage "The Sporting News" photo supplements of two Hall of Famers, plus another Baltimore Oriole. "The Sporting News" was regarded as Baseball's Bible. Founded in 1886, it was a weekly publication covering solely baseball. The three supplements in this lot all were published in 1899, and each consists of a photo (8.75x11") of a player from the Baltimore Orioles, then a team in the National League. This was the team's final National League season, and they finished in fourth place that season. The Baltimore Orioles reappeared as a Major League team in 1901, with some of the same players, but now in the new American League. 1) Photo of Hall of Famer John J. McGraw, manager and third baseman, Baltimore, 1899. McGraw was a star third baseman and an immortal as a manager, of the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Giants. McGraw's strategy was ahead of its time and his teams made regular use of such tactics as defensive shifts, cut-offs and hit-and-runs long before other teams. 2) Photo of Wilber Robinson, captain and catcher, Baltimore, 1899. Although listed as Wilber in "The Sporting News," Robinson is officially listed in the Hall of Fame as Wilbert. Long McGraw's right-hand man when McGraw managed the New York Giants, Robinson, popularly known as "Uncle Robbie," went on to achieve acclaim as the manager of Brooklyn in the National League, for years known as the Robins in his honor. 3) Photo of Jerry H. Nopps, pitcher, for Baltimore, 1899. Nops went 17-11 as a starter for Baltimore in 1899.
