F. Earl Christy was a widely successful artist whose works, particularly watercolors, are everywhere. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1882, he attended the Pennsylvania College of Arts from 1905-07. In 1905, his wonderfully successful College Girl postcard series began. This series featured very attractive, beautifully dressed college women posing, in a romanticized way, at venues such as football games, and tennis and golf matches. They also posed with automobiles. His work appeared on vintage magazine covers such as Photoplay and Modern Screen. Later, after the College Girl craze, he tended to paint more mature men and women, often athletes, such as baseball stars, but still was in a romanticized style. In 1909, the time around which this work was created, the Pittsburgh Pirates won their first World Series over the Detroit Tigers, led by legendary Hall of Famer Honus Wagner. So the beautiful, and beautifully attired woman in the watercolor, is waving a Pittsburgh Pirates banner. Framed at 23.5x31.5". As a hugely successful commercial artist, Christy's work has been in book illustrations, sheet music, china and serving dishes, textiles - just everywhere. This specialty piece watercolor is in Excellent condition, and the wooden frame shows a bit of wear with a few scratches and tiny chips. Wonderful work, whose value has stood the test of time.
