Maris reached the pinnacle of fame when he challenged Mickey Mantle in 1961 in an attempt to break Babe Ruth's all-time one-season mark of 60 home runs. Maris and Mantle were neck-and-neck when an injury to Mantle left Maris as the lone challenger, and Maris hit his 61st on the last day of the season against Tracy Stallard and the Red Sox. 1) Maris leaning against the batting cage at what appears to be the original Yankee Stadium.
