Historic photo from Jack Johnson's fourth Heavyweight title defense on October 16, 1909, at the Mission Street Arena, at Colma, California. Johnson outweighed Ketchel by 35 pounds. The fight was scheduled for 20 rounds and in later years talk surfaced that the fighters, who were friendly, wanted the fight to last 20 rounds so that patrons would pay to see the film of it to be shown at theaters. In the 12th round, Ketechel floored Johnson. The Champion, apparently feeling betrayed, went after Ketchel with a vengeance. Johnson knocked out Ketchel with a punch so hard that several of Ketchel's teeth became embedded in Johnson's glove. None of this later animosity is apparent in this pre-fight "touch gloves" photo. Framed 23.5x33.5". October 16 1909. Fought for the World Heavyweight Title. Johnson wins by KO in round 12 (15). Photo is in Excellent condition.
