Nice cabinet photo (17x24") of Tommy Ryan, one of the greatest middleweights in history. Ryan was the Middleweight Champion of the World from 1894 until 1898, when he vacated the title. Then he became the Welterweight Champion of the World from 1898-1906. Ryan was an innovator, credited with helping devise the crouch defense. A famous story about Ryan concerned a non-title middleweight fight in which, in the weeks before the match his former sparring partner, Kid McCoy, resenting the rough beatings he took while sparring, allegedly played being frail and ill. The story was McCoy used flour to give his face a pasty appearance to enhance the deception. Something worked because McCoy won, a KO over Ryan in the 15th round. But that was an anomaly as Ryan won 90 of 109 fights, with 11 draws and only six losses. He is in the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Photo, from Robinson and Roe Co, is in Good condition, with some fading and smudges from aging.
