Forbes Field opened in 1909, and it was the country's first triple-tiered concrete and steel stadium. Pittsburgh Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss, with help from his friend, industrialist Andrew Carnegie, secured the relatively cheap land outside the heart of the city and arranged the construction. Forbes Field was originally known as "Dreyfuss's Folly," because getting to the stadium required a "long" ten-minute trolley ride from downtown Pittsburgh. Here is the oil cloth banner that went in a roller that was on the top front of the trolley, facing outside. The banner (17x50") has 5.5" and 6" white letters on a black background, and it announces: "Stadium - Forbes Field Chartered." You've seen the ones for trains and buses, but this one is for trolleys. Shows signs of normal wear, such as small marks and scuffing on the oil cloth, but otherwise in good condition. Forbes Field on back as well. Makes a great display, recalling the stadium (closed in 1970) that showcased Wagner to Kiner to Clemente.
