Incredible three-page document dates from early days of the republic and is signed by the sitting third President (Jefferson) and future fourth president (Madison). Page one reads: "The United States of America, To all to whom these Letters Patent shall come: John Greene a citizen of New York in the United States, hath alleged that he has invented a new and useful improvement being a mechanical Spring Buckle." Dated May 20, 1807 and signed "By The President" Thomas Jefferson and "Secretary of State" James Madison, along with the seal of the United States in red wax. Page two: Describes the invention and is signed by the inventor John Green and two witnesses, who were members of the Stuyvesant family (a family of American politicians and land owners), including Peter Gerard Stuyvesant and Nicholas Fish, the father of famed New York politician Hamilton Fish.
