Eugene O'Neill, one of the country's finest playwrights, composed his Major Opus, Long Day's Journey into Night, while living at his Danville, California home, called Tao House. O'Neill's semi-autobiographical play was not intended to be performed until 25-years after the playwright's death, but his former wife, Carlotta Monterey, legally contradicted the playwright's stipulation, and the play premiered in 1956 in Stockholm, Sweden and then in made its Broadway debut that same yea, winning a Tony Award. O'Neill was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for this work in '57. In the wonderfully contrasting B&W hues of the photo, O'Neill writes the following inscription:" To Farina, For the eyes have it, what? Gene....With much love. Tao House, 1941." Tao House was where O"Neill wrote Long Day's Journey, finished months before he signed this photo.
