Immaculate carving by local New England artist speaks to the old ages of baseball. Commissioned by an early collector in the 1960s. Influenced by the great carvers of the 19th century who created baseball figures such as this one to go along with the more traditional Native American figures that stood in front of cigar stores and tobacconists. Carver is unknown (unsigned), but he must have been a master due to the impressive detail. Original paint has a distressed look to give it more age. Bat and base are separate pieces that fit together flawlessly to attest to the quality. Pinpoint detail down to his historically accurate shoes, tie-front jersey with "Boston," baseball belt, and red ribbed stockings. Open wood base similar to those used for the original figures. Stands 69" tall including base.
