A key member of the Army & Union during the Civil War, Abner Doubleday would make history when he fired the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter in the Battle of Gettysburg. Despite being widely known for his time during the war, Doubleday's influence can still be seen in San Fransisco where his patented cable car system still runs today. Offered here is a seldom seen hand written 1864 letter from Doubleday to a Martin within the military. Doubleday makes mention of the French along with allowing Martin to wear new stripes promoting him in rank. Signed on the reverse in black ink, "A. Doubleday," which can be viewed via a reverse viewing port within the professionally framed 12.5" x 20" item. A rare finding indeed! Overall in fine condition with minor handling wear to the edges.
