Two beautiful pairs of boxing gloves worn by Sugar Ray Robinson, one of the greatest pugilists of all time. Both pairs are Denkert model showing heavy use, and one of the gloves is cut underneath. Our consignor was given these gloves outside Madison Square Garden by Robinson himself, but cannot recall after which bout exactly. Robinson had 25 bouts at Madison Square Garden from 1940-1962, including his first professional one in 1940. From 1943 to 1951, Robinson compiled the third longest unbeaten streak in professional boxing history, failing to take a loss for 91 consecutive bouts. Consignor met Robinson through his uncle who owned a hat store on 125th St. in NYC. Comes with two signed handwritten postcards to said uncle from Robinson, both dated 1951, as well as a photo of said uncle with Joe Louis and Robinson.
