Spalding No. 4. was originally used by Samuel M. Chase who played for Yale in the early 1880s. This 34" and 24 oz bat has seen good game time. The Spalding trademark is dark, complete and very legible. The unique original string handle is loose and shows the signs of an early repair to the bat's handle; two nails are visible that are holding down a splinter. The unwound string appears to be mostly intact and could easily re-wrapped, giving the handle back its unique look. Although there are many chips in the barrel and repairs on the handle, this rare and unique Spalding bat displays well and is highly collectible. Recently discovered collection of bats used by Samuel M. Chase, a young Connecticut ballplayer and member of the Yale University Class of 1883. Two of his bats bear paper labels with the word "memorabilia," the earliest known use of the term we have seen.
