Offered is an extremely difficult collection of cards, issued and distributed at the Topps Awards Banquet in 1964. The set consists of 36 cards, of which this collection has 35 of the 36, and also includes the very scarce original presentation box. Topps had began the All-Star rookie designation since 1959, and despite distributing professional programs for each preceding banquet, the company decided to issue a commemorative card set for the 1964 banquet, held on October 22 at New York's Waldorf Astoria. A card company issuing a card set? Great idea! This set "reads" like a program, with each card a single "page." They begin with descriptive pages, highlighting key Topps sports employees and baseball officials, with one card featuring Jackie Robinson. However, the keys are the cards, which honored the minor league player of the year in 1964 (Luis Tiant), each individual player on that 1964 team (all on their own cards) then honoring all the past winners, with each prior team on a single card - basically a "team card." The one missing card is also the most popular and valuable card, that of Pete Rose, who is part of the 1963 Topps team card. However, this group is mostly high grade with EIGHT cards PSA graded. Includes: PSA NM-MT 8 - 3 cards w/#8 The 1959 All-Star Team, #10 The 1961 All-Star Team and 25 Tony Conigliaro single card. PSA NM 7 - 2 cards w/#9 The 1960 All-Star Team and 25 Rico Carty. PSA EX-MT 6 - 2 cards w/#11 1962 All-Star Team and 19 Richie Allen. PSA EX+ 5.5 - 1 card #5 Topps A/S Team Committee w/Jackie Robinson. This is a great collection of these scarce Topps presentation cards, including the very rare original foil box, while missing only one for completion.
