Considered to be the "father of baseball," Alexander J. Cartwright was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938, 46 years after his death. Cartwright formed the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club, a splinter group of the earlier Gotham Base Ball Club, in 1842, when it is believed he drew up many of the rules of the modern game of baseball, though that is now disputed. Whether or not Cartwright actually invented the modern game, he was still pivotal in shaping the future of baseball. This rare signature of Cartwright's appears on a Bishop & Co. bank check and is dated October 16, 1880. It is made out for $20, and has been signed by Cartwright at the bottom right, while the payee endorsed the opposite side. Cartwright's signature is graded NM-MT 8 by PSA and has been encapsulated. This is a fabulous offering from one of the supposed architects of the game.
