The ball dates to the mid-1940s, just a short time before Ruth passed away in 1948. The prodigious slugger was known for his offensive prowess on the diamond, as well as his outlandish off-the-field exploits, including once reportedly eating 12 hot dogs and drinking eight sodas between games of a double header. It was this sort of overly indulgent behavior that likely proved to be Ruth's undoing. The baseball legend was diagnosed with cancer in late 1946, and despite access to the best care available, he passed away less than two years later.
