Though not nearly as well known as his legendary counterpart, Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby was the second black player to break baseball's color barrier and first to play in the American League when he signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1947. Doby did, however, enjoy a first of his own. When he and Satchel Paige teamed up to lead the Indians to a World Series victory in '48, the pair became the first two African-American players to win baseball's most coveted prize. This "Larry Doby" figurine circa 1947 was custom made by Stanford Pottery for a Cleveland-area bartender. The doll was originally white, but the bartender's friends petitioned Stanford to paint it black in honor of Doby's arrival in Cleveland, to which the company obliged. Doby would go on to have a sensational career for the Indians. In addition to his World Series title, his personal accolades included being named a seven-time All-Star and finishing second in the AL MVP voting in 1954. In 1998, Doby was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The "Indian" stands 8" tall and is stamped on the bottom: "Stanford Pottery, Sebring, Ohio." It comes with an LOA from the original owner's nephew.
