This football program from a December 5, 1874, tilt between Columbia and Yale comes from a time the sport was pretty much unrecognizable. For starters, the words foot and ball appear conspicuously far apart on the program's cover, while a year prior a group of schools including Yale and Columbia met to outline a standard set of rules for the game, rules which specifically prohibited running with the ball. "Touchdowns" are found nowhere on the program. Instead, the game was won by scoring "goals," which Yale recorded six of to Columbia's one, though that is not recorded in the space devoted to it. The game was played at Hamilton Park, as the program notes on its cover, and inside can be found the lineups for both schools. It measures 3x4.5" and is in EX-MT condition with no creasing. This is an extremely rare offering given its condition and placement in the very nascent stages of the game.
