Entering the bout a perfect 42-0, Heavyweight Champ Larry Holmes seemed to have little to worry about facing the relatively inexperienced Tim Witherspoon on May 20, 1983, but the overwhelming favorite was given all he could handle by the upstart Witherspoon. The fight "went the distance" and after 12 hard-fought rounds a split decision went in favor of Holmes, which was later named by Boxing Monthly as one of the ten most controversial decisions of all time. These white, Everlast Pony trunks worn by Holmes during the fight are emblematic of his gritty performance, as they show great wear with stains on the front. A large Larry Holmes patch appears on the left leg, and the trunks have been photo-matched to that night. Holmes would go on to win another five bouts before suffering his first defeat at the hands of Michael Spinks in 1985, falling just one victory short of Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record.
