They captured the hearts of all Americans and are still rightfully known as the "Miracle Men." The 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team defied daunting odds in upsetting Russia in the semifinals on the way to grabbing the Gold in Lake Placid, and that team for the ages was the recipient of countless accolades and awards. Among them was the prestigious "Sportsperson of the Year" Award presented annually by Sports Illustrated since the magazine's inception in 1954. Here it is, in all its glory: an ancient-themed Greek urn on top of a wood base housing a plaque that reads: "Sports Illustrated Sportsmen of the Year 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team." All the team members are listed by name, along with coaches Herb Brooks and Craig Patrick, from whom this lot originates. Below the names reads the following inscription: "For symbolizing in character and performance the ideals of sportsmanship." The urn - which measures just under 14" tall - has a chip inside the upper ring but otherwise is in EX condition. Patrick - who had played parts of nine NHL seasons - went on to become general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins, helping to assemble two Stanley Cup champion teams. He also coached two seasons with the Pens.
