Left-handed pitcher Lou Brissie signed this standard player's contract prior to his penultimate season with the 1952 Cleveland Indians. The Army veteran and World War II hero earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals after suffering a shattered tibia during battle. Despite doctors' insistence that he have his leg amputated, Brissie refused, stating that such a drastic measure would shatter his dream of playing professional baseball. That dream became reality as Brissie wound up playing seven seasons with the Tribe and Philadelphia A's, earning All-Star honors in 1949 along the way. The contract is also signed by Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg (Cleveland's general manager at the time) and American League President William Harridge, making this a perfect triumvirate of Hall of Fame signatures.
