Graded by PSA NM-MT 8. Very high end example of this seldom seen Babe Ruth card from his heyday period of 1926-1932 when Ruth helped lead the New York Yankees to four World Series appearances and three World Series titles. The W517 cards, while technically a "strip card," present much better than the crude drawing strips from a decade earlier. These large cards, measuring approximately 3x4", feature actual black and white and sepia tinted photographic images, many never before seen on other card issues, including this Ruth example. They were distributed in strips of three, are very scarce pre-war representations, with high grade examples extremely rare. Of the 1,200 total examples graded and encapsulated by PSA, only 29 cards have been granted PSA MINT 9 status (2.3%) and 107 cards have been classified as PSA NM-MT 8 (8.9%). Not a single example has graded PSA GEM MINT 10. The difficulty with this issue is their large size and the fact cards needed to be cut from the panels. This Ruth example, numbered 20 in the 54-card set is graded by PSA at NM-MT 8, but presents higher, bordering, if not being MINT condition. All four corners form perfect right angles, with no wear to any corner. The image is perfectly focused, with a blemish-free surface. A total of 63 Ruth #20 cards (he also has an action throwing pose as card #4) have been viewed by PSA, with this example one of two cards at PSA NM-MT 8 status, with not a single example grading MINT, although this offered copy has a MINT appearance. Likely the nicest example of this seldom seen Ruth card extant, Leland's is proud to offer a tremendous run of high grade W517 cards in this 2017 Masters Auction.
