Though his baseball career as a player, manager, coach and scout was solid, yet unspectacular, Bob Swift does have a large claim to fame in baseball legend. As catcher for the Detroit Tigers, Swift was immortalized in one of the most memorable images ever, kneeling to receive a pitch during the infamous at bat of Eddie Gaedel on August 19, 1951. This all-original road jersey has "Detroit" in script in black felt on the front and "9" in the same black felt on the back, with MacGregor Goldsmith size 44 tag in the collar along with "9" sewn on a swatch of material below the tag. It shows nice use, there are some small moth holes and a few small stains, which are the only defects keeping this from near perfect condition. Gaedel, a little-person standing at all of 3'7" tall, was sent to the plate as a gimmick by St. Louis Browns' owner Bill Veeck. With Swift catching, Gaedel drew a four-pitch walk in his one-and-only big league plate appearance.
