This is half of the steering wheel that Art Pollard was holding when he perished while practicing time trials prior to the 1973 Indianapolis 500. Pollard's car clipped the wall coming out of turn one and did a half-spin as it careened to the grass, flipped upside down, slid and flipped yet again, claiming Pollard's life at the age of 46. This lot is a disturbing reminder of the narrow line between sport and fatal circumstance.
