From the most iconic horse of the turn of the 20th Century, he was the Secretariat of his time. At his peak Dan Patch was one of the most famous "celebrities" in the world. This is a matching set of sheepskin fleece and leather forelock harnesses used by Dan Patch in the early 1900s, when he was the outstanding pacer of his day devastating all world speed records (at least 14 times). Ultimately, he set the world's record for the fastest mile by a harness horse, a record that stood for 32 years. Well used, pair of forelock harnesses are listed in Helms Hall Museum inventory as: "HR.Q0049a/b Pair of Forelock Harnesses made of a collar-like band of hide sewn over a wider band of fleece...These cover the horse's ankle just above hoof...4 1/2 x 18 inches...DAN PATCH." They also sport the original stamping in the leather reading, "Gilliam Brand...Made By The Sell H.G. Co. Canton, OH." with size "M 9 X X." Of magnificent quality, these show excellent use. Obtained directly from Helms Museum, the iconic sports museum created by namesake Paul Helms in the 1930s and managed by Bill Schroeder. This California Bakery magnate (Helms Bakery) was a sponsor of the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles and carries a connection to the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to this day.
