Rogers Hornsby knew how to wield the lumber, earning seven NL batting titles in his 22-year career, which included being named the league’s MVP on two occasions. It is very difficult to find a Hornsby bat that is this nice, and this Hillerich and Bradsby beauty is a model H117 - this is prior to H&B stamping model numbers on the bats, but because of the dimensions and order records it is concluded that it is the H117 model. Weighing a hefty 37 ounces and measuring 35 inches, it shows heavy use with a handle crack, there are ball and cleat marks on the barrel and the handle has been slightly scored to increase grip, with two notches on the knob end. The barrel was slightly planed for side-writing, which meant that it was sent back to the H&B factory, likely by Hornsby, but the writing has faded to the point where it is not readable. There is also evidence of a mailing label, another indicator that it was sent back to the factory after it was cracked. The accompanying LOA shows this specimen as graded GU 8.5 by PSA - a very high grade for a Hornsby bat, which would fit well in the any of the World's finest collections.
