Among the elite pieces in the collecting hobby, this bat is one of the top two existing pieces of equipment used by Hall of Famer Tris Speaker. A superstar of the early 20th century, Speaker won World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox (twice) and Cleveland Indians, and he still holds records for assists and double-plays by an outfielder, a testament to his defensive prowess. This Hillerich & Bradsby is 36 inches and weighs a mighty 40.8 ounces, matching Speaker's ordering records, and displays heavy use with handle crack, cleat marks, ball marks, and stitch impressions, on the barrel. Speaker sent this bat back to the factory after it was cracked, as is evidenced by the faded side-writing on the barrel and also remnants of a mailing label put directly on the bat. It is made from special Majaqua, which was ordered by Speaker in this model, weight and length in 1923 only, the very year in which he led the AL in runs batted in. A fantastic bat from one of the best players ever, although the side-writing is faded, a clear "8-2" can be made out, which would reference an August 21, 1923 return date - a date listed in the Louisville Slugger factory records specifically referencing a bat made of "Cuban Wood" returned by Speaker. This exquisite offering comes with a Letter of Authenticity and has been given the highest possible grade by PSA, GU 10.
