This extremely rare brass match safe, or vesta, is from the era of the mid-century pugilists circa 1850s-60s. Truly marvelous detail in the look of pugilist art of the era, it opens to hold wood stick matches with scraper on bottom to spark the matches. Has some nicks and bends on verso where matches and smoking pipes were tamped against it, otherwise fine condition. 2 3/4" long.
