The true rookie of the most famous purely Negro League baseball player. "The Black Babe Ruth" is from the first class of Cooperstown and an American icon. This is a beautiful specimen that has not seen the light of day in many years. Emanating from the collection of a hobby old timer it has a front that is EX-MT in appearance. The only defect is the verso which is scribbled in ink. For display purposes this is a gorgeous specimen. There are only about 25 of these highly-coveted Puerto Rican baseball cards known to exist, without a doubt one of the most underrated rookie cards in the hobby. The story of Josh Gibson is folklore, yet fact. Rejected along with his brethren by the powers that be in white baseball, when the doors were first opened in 1946, it was too late for him to be "The First." Even more tragically, he died of a stroke in 1947 at age 35, just three months before Jackie Robinson broke the major league color line. The man who hit 800 home runs was buried in an unmarked grave, however, no one can ever take from him the fact that Josh Gibson is one of the greatest baseball players in history, black, white or purple.
