One of the finest hockey sticks ever offered for auction, this is the actual stick that the man who was considered the greatest goaltender in the world used in the 1980 "Miracle" Olympics. His status was legendary, but on February 22, 1980, Vladislav Tretiak was pulled from the game by coach Viktor Tikhonov after a late first-period goal to Mark Johnson. This undoubtedly contributed to the USA "Miracle on Ice" victory that led the way to a shocking upset and memorable Gold Medal for Team USA. This very stick is the one he famously broke in the game versus Team USA in the greatest upset in sports history. It shows excellent use from throughout the Lake Placid games; this Koho is custom taped on the handle and blade. Provenance: After it was cracked it was handed to a lucky fan who gave it for safe keeping to our consignor, a Lake Placid volunteer worker, to hold until the end of the game. Incredibly, in the hubbub the fan never returned to claim the stick and the worker took it home. Comes with an LOA from that very volunteer confirming the provenance.
