Here is a 19th Century collection of Paris Mutual Pool tickets and poolroom betting tickets, the forerunner of Parimutuel betting, a system invented in France and introduced to America by Leonard Jerome a Brooklyn, New York financier and maternal grandfather of Winston Churchill. This collection includes two Paris Mutual tickets, an 1873 blue 244 #1025 and 1873 green 247 #1020. Then, 20 different (24 total), primarily large betting tickets issued by prominent gambling houses and betting parlors from the 1800s for races at the Coney Island Jockey Club, Jerome Park, and Morris Park, and for various racing clubs in the metropolitan New York area and other areas throughout the country. The tickets include the following gambling houses: Appleby & Johnson, Cridge & Co, Emery & Jones - Baltimore Turf Club, Bray & Woodford, A. M Burton and Co., New Jersey Jockey Club, Gloucester Turf Exchange, Sporting News Office, Fox & Co. - Louisville, KY, Mahony & Co, Ehrlich & Co, Newton & Co, Colonade Pool Room, Kentucky Horse Exchange, Powers & Co, Turf Exchange (two tickets), Kelly & Bliss (four tickets), J.C.
