In 2005, Saint Liam capped off his highly accomplished Horse of the Year season by winning the Breeders' Cup Classic. Along the way, he claimed victories in the Donn Handicap, Stephen Foster Handicap and Woodward Stakes. For his career, Saint Liam earned $4,456,995 from 20 starts, then was retired to Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky. But in August 2006, he slipped and fell, suffering an untreatable left tibia fracture and the six-year-old stallion was humanely euthanized. Before his death, Saint Liam had 115 mares, one of whom - Havre de Grace - would go on to win the 2011 Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year, becoming one of only a small group of fillies in history to take home the prestigious award. This white cloth with black lettering and #2 was worn during Saint Liam's historic battle with 2004 Horse of the Year and Hall of Famer, Ghostzapper, in the 2004 Woodward Stakes. After a heart-pounding stretch run that is still talked about today by those in attendance, Ghostzapper put his head in front as Saint Liam had to settle for second.
