“Skippy” was one of the most decorated racers in history, being named Eclipse Champion Three-Year-Old Male in 1996, Champion Older Male in 1997 and 1998, and 1998 Horse of the Year. Winner of 10 Grade 1 events, two of his signature races were a victory over Cigar in the 1996 Jockey Club Gold Cup and a five-length victory in the 1997 Breeders’ Cup Classic. The fourth-leading thoroughbred money earner of all time (as of 02/09/2015), Skip Away won over $9.6 million in his brilliant career. He was elected to the Thoroughbred Hall of Fame in 2004, and Blood-Horse Magazine ranked him the 32nd greatest American thoroughbred of the 20th century. In the 1998 Classic, Skip Away ran on a bowed tendon and finished sixth in this, his last race.
