The fledgling NFL's Pottsville Maroons franchise was formed in 1920 and remained in that Pennsylvania town until a move to Boston in 1929. From the team's final season of 1928, however, future Hall of Fame halfback John McNally ("Johnny Blood") put on a show, scoring the last two touchdowns in club history against the Green Bay Packers in a 26-0 home victory on November 25, 1928, including a 65-yard "pick-6" that capped the scoring. Shortly thereafter, he and his teammates were given commemorative football-shaped fobs such as this one, appropriately carved from coal. "Johnny Blood" would not follow the franchise East when it became the Boston Bulldogs, signing instead with those same Packers he helped defeat. McNally was a genius who graduated from high school at age 14. He was also known for his infectious, irrepressible personality.
