July 27, 1999 was not a landmark day in New York Mets history. The Amazin's played the Pittsburgh Pirates at Shea Stadium that Tuesday evening, and along with losing the game, 5-1, they "alienated" some fans and media members by changing their name to the Mercury Mets, wearing "visionary" uniforms and altering player scoreboard photos by adding third eyes and green skin to players. It was all a part of Major League Baseball's "Turn Ahead the Clock" promotion, teams would play in futuristic uniforms with bizarre scoreboard graphics and the public address announcers introducing player positions as "Left Sector" and "Third Quadrant." Here's a prototype of one such shirt the Mets would wear for that game. The unused shirt, made by Russell Athletics, has no number and is in NM-MT condition. A DVD is included, containing the first three innings of that night's telecast.
