Sterling silver medal awarded to the legendary Frederick Brunning Madison (1849-1907) for winning the heavyweight championship of the Marquis of Queensberry's Challenge Cup in 1873. Born as Frederick Chappel, his grandfather founded Chappel Music Publishers. One of Britain's greatest all around sportsmen, he rowed for Oxford University, played Wimbledon and golf in the British Open. Most prolific as a football player, he played for Scotland in the first unofficial International match as F. Maclean and for England in the first Official International match on November 30, 1872. He won two FA Cup Winner’s Medals during his career with Oxford University in 1874 and Wanders in 1876. On retirement he became the first deaf-mute to graduate from University. This piece came directly from his great granddaughter who was a beauty queen before turning into a bodybuilder and gaining 2nd in the Miss Universe competition in 1980. In original presentation Moroccan case with imprinted gold Hancock's & Co. of Bond Street, London. Case has vertical crack. Medal is 2" in diameter, sterling silver and impressively heavy at 1.8 oz. Comes with original delicate thin glass covering. In original, uncleaned condition. Lovely silver. The Queensberry rules were drafted in 1865 making this one of the earliest-if not earliest "official" boxing medals ever sold.
